A new press release from Amazon announced that Amazon will be launching library lending for Kindle books. As a fan of libraries and Kindle, and as an AmazonEncore author, this makes me very happy.
To mark the release of my two young adult novels at the beginning of this month, copies of Favorite and Life On Hold were sent out to reviewers. I've been the lucky recipient of many terrific reviews and I don't take any of them for granted. The most recent, at BookRoom Reviews, includes reviews of both books, and an interview with me, written by writer and poet, Christina Zawadiwsky.
Christina asked a lot of thoughtful questions including this one:
CZ: You’re obviously interested in the family, as each novel has had families with missing components and its characters have to grapple with those losses. Do you think that the root of this is sociological – that nowadays there are far more families that have lost various members (through divorce, illness, or tragedy)?
Whoa! I'd been hoping no one would notice all the missing parents in my fiction, but you can't get anything past Christina. To see how I answered that question (and more), visit BookRoom Reviews.
Yesterday The Denver Post had an article titled, The new way we read: 10 ways digital books are changing our literary lives. Years ago, when I was first trying to break into print, The Denver Post published one of my humorous essays, so I was tickled to see my name included in this piece. I was listed as being one of the "authors as famous for their aggressive self-promotion as for their books." Far be it for me to question the The Denver Post, but just between us blog friends? I'm not all that aggressive. Sometimes when I'm at the deli counter waiting for my half pound of ham and they give me a pound by mistake, I just take it rather than start something.
And saving the best news for last--I found out earlier in the month that AmazonEncore sold the trade paperback rights to my two adult novels, Easily Amused and A Scattered Life, to Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. They will be released as Houghton Mifflin Harcourt titles later this year.
At first when my editor told me this news, I didn't quite get it. I felt like my parents had called me into the living room and said--start packing, you're getting a new family! But then my editor explained that this is a very good thing for everyone involved.
To put it in perspective, Jeff Belle, v-p, Amazon Publishing, said that the deal with HMH will extend the reach of its authors’ works. “Houghton has a great team and we’re thrilled to be working with them to bring our authors to a larger print audience,” Belle said. “Our goal is to maximize opportunities for all of our authors.”
I'm excited to become a part of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, a venerable publishing house with an impressive list of authors and books.
Nothing stays the same in publishing anymore, does it? I've given up trying to predict what's going to happen next.
Later,
Karen

Congratulations! It all sounds great. I'd be confused for a moment or two as well. It does sound like it worked out for the best, though.
I'm really interested to see how the library/Kindle deal works for indies. Thanks so much for sharing!
Thanks, Michelle. I'm interested in seeing how the library/Kindle thing works for indies as well. There's so much going on in the ebook world it's hard to keep track of all the new developments.
That is awesome! So happy for you. I just got a Kindle for my birthday and I am uploading my books from my PC to the ereader. I haven't started Favorite yet but it looks good. Congratulations again for all your success.

Very cool news, Karen! Congrats! I hope to see you at the AmazonEncore party at BEA. Will you be there? :)
Thanks, Sean. Let me know when your sequel comes out so I can return the favor.
Hey Maria! Yes, I will be at the AmazonEncore party in NYC! We can get caught up then. :)
Oh Karen congratulations!!! I think publishing is very confusing! I am just so happy for you, HMH has big reaches and that means your works will be seen by so many more readers...whoohooo!!!
Kindle library deal, sounds good to me, I read it on a blog as well.
Um, when is it time for you to write a new adult book? I need more!!
Enjoy your happy news.
Wow! I can imagine what a surprise/shock the news about HMH must have been. Sounds really awesome, though.
Congratulations! Way to go!! :-D
Congrats! I hope to meet you at the NY expo as well. I am also an AmazonEncore author and also have been picked up by HMH. I chuckled over your comment of not knowing how to take it at first-- I felt the same but then Terry told me to celebrate so I knew it was a good thing!
Anita, thanks for your congratulations! And the part where you wrote this: Um, when is it time for you to write a new adult book? I need more!!--is just the kind of thing I dreamt about when I was trying (unsuccessfully) to get my books published. Bless you!
And to answer your question: I just turned in a children's book to my editor. It should come out in November. And I'm currently working on an adult novel and it's going well. :-)
Hey Debbi, NY Times bestselling author (I'm such a dork--I love being able to say that), thanks for the kind words!
Kay, too funny that we had the same reaction. I should have known better though, because Terry has been right about everything so far. BTW, I'm familiar with your book and am looking forward to meeting you in NYC.
Wow, Karen! What fantastic news!!! That is just so interesting and exciting about HMH!
I'm so loving Favorite too, by the way~I just started it last night and read until the wee hours of the morning..:)

Jools, I'm so glad you're enjoying
Favorite! It's sort of a weird story, but I've been getting great feedback from the target audience (teen readers).
¡Mucho felicitaciones! on the HMH deal. And it didn't even require any of your famous aggressive self-promotion! I don't buy this image of you quietly accepting that pound of deli meat when you asked for half a pound. Not for a moment! ツ

Thank YOU, Karen! I'm such a dork I still can't quite believe those words apply to me. :)
Bill, shhhh! I'm working hard to create a certain online persona. You're going to blow my cover.
Debbi, the words definitely apply and you deserve them. :)
