I'm going to the BookExpo America!

Next week I'm going to New York as a guest of AmazonEncore to attend the BookExpo America. I'm flying in on Monday morning, going to an Amazon party that night, then attending BEA Tuesday, and coming home the following morning. This is HUGE for me. The party worries me a little bit because the invitation didn't say what kind of party. I'm thinking I definitely need to dress up, because it's New York, but I don't want to overdo it because it's not the Academy Awards or anything.  I don't want to go too far in the other direction, though, because if I'm too schlumpfy I'll perpetuate the Wisconsin stereotype. Then I might as well show up in a Green Bay Packers t-shirt, baggy shorts, and a fanny pack.

Oh, what to wear? What to wear? Guys have it so easy.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to meeting a lot of the other Amazon Publishing authors, including Helen Smith, the author of the novel, Alison Wonderland. She's coming to the event from England and seems to really have it together. I'm sure she's not worried about what to wear to the party.

Helen recently interviewed a few authors on the topic of the Book Expo on her blog and one of them was me. Thanks, Helen! If you go here and scroll down, you can also read interviews with authors Connie Brockway and Charlie Williams.

Apropos of nothing, my great grandmother on my father's side was named Helen Smith. No relation, I'm sure.

Switching the subject--my house just emptied out after five days of houseguests. They weren't even my guests, they were friends of my older son--guys he met playing an online game. This was the third year of what has become an annual event. The first year, I was a little worried about having strangers from the Internet stay overnight at our house. They didn't murder us in our sleep that year or the next, so I'm pretty okay with it now.

In fact, these young guys (there were five at one point, including Charlie) took my husband and me out to eat as a thank you. Plus, they were quiet, and considerate, and neat. And one of them gave me a bouquet of flowers as a gift, something my son thought was overdoing it, but I thought was great.

They stayed in our basement, when they weren't off doing other guy stuff like Frisbee golf and God-knows-what-else. One day when they were out at Buffalo Wild Wings (young dudes LOVE the wings), I took pictures of my basement to show you. One is the gaming area, and one shows part of the sleeping area.

They were ideal guests, but I'm still glad to get my basement and refrigerator back.

Now I'm off to double check my closet and worry about shoes.

Happy Monday!

Karen

Just don't wear a foam cheesehead, and everything will be okay. :)

Have a great time. Please report back for the rest of us who will not be attending BEA.

Karen, your cheesehead comment made me laugh! Thanks for brightening my Monday morning. And yes, I will report back.

The website where the party is going to be held says, "Casual Elegant dress code is enforced." I take that to mean, "Boring clothes. No sneakers."

Can't wait to finally meet you!

R.J. Keller, I didn't even think to look on the website! That helps a bit.

I agree--it will be great to finally meet in person.

Thanks, Jools! It will be kind of a whirlwind, but I'm planning on having a good time.

Have a great time! I say black dress-simple, classic, chic!

Karen McQuestion said...

Therese, I think you're right! Plus, black is supposed to be slimming, always a plus.

So glad to hear you are going to the BEA. I hope you have lots of fun. And come back and blog all about it. And the Amazon party sounds amazing. Take photos.

I think "casual elegant" means the kind of clothes people used to wear to church, before people stopped dressing up to go to church. I like the idea of basic black, too.

Karen McQuestion said...

Lena, I'm famous for taking terrible photos. But I'll see what I can do.

Coleslaw, I like your definition of "Casual elegant." Basic black sounds like a NY kind of thing, doesn't it?

So Karen, there's a Wisconsin stereotype? And here I thought folks only picked on us Texans. I'd send you a Stetson, but on second thought, the cheesehead might go over better in NYC.

Seriously, don't worry about it. You'll do fine and anyone too fixated on what your wearing probably isn't anyone you want to be best buds with anyway.

Black is the NYC uniform, you definitely won't go wrong wearing it. Charcoal and navy are next in line. I'm sure no matter what your attire, your personality will be breath of fresh air! Have a fantastic time-looking forward to your report.

I vote Charcoal, then. Black is so boring! Congratulations on attending this party. Sounds fantastic!

YA: Cheat, Liar
Adult: Shackled

Karen McQuestion said...

R.E. McDermott, there's a definite Wisconsin stereotype and it involves cheeseheads and dairy cows. A Stetson would look cool by comparison. :) Oh, and I agree with you about not being best buds with people who are fixated on appearances.

Charl, sounds like you've spent some time in New York! Thanks for the words of reassurance.

Karen McQuestion said...

J.E. Medrick--we posted at the same time! Your vote for charcoal has been duly noted. :-)

Thanks, David!

Hi Karen,

I'm with Therese. You can't go wrong with a classic like a little black dress.

Anything simple and not too flashy will look fine. In other words, you don't want to wear orange or plaid. lol

PS: The cheesehead would be memorable, but definitely should stay home. :)

Karen McQuestion said...

Hey Debbi,I'm not flashy anyway, so I should be able to follow your directions. Thanks!

The sleepover looks great. Looking forward to meeting you in New York.

See you next week, Helen!

Or you could go with a really dark purple like this:

Not necessarily that dress, but the color.

This sounds so exciting to me. I was just thinking about what I'd wear to something like that and I'm sort of drawing a blank if jeans and a t shirt are out. I'm sure you'll be fine though. :)

Karen McQuestion said...

Coleslaw--I like it!

Wren, thanks for the reassurance. <3

I'm jealous of your trip! I'm supposed to go to collect an IPPY award--but I can't! Hopefully one of these years I can don the little black dress and fulfill my NYC dreams! I'm really enjoying your blog and I LOVE A Scattered Life. Your experiences are a huge inspiration to me. Thank you for sharing so much of them.

Karen McQuestion said...

S Alini, you are very welcome. I'm glad to help.

Hi again Kathleen! I have to admit to being incredibly nosy. After you mentioned the IPPY award, I looked up your novel The Last Letter, and thought it sounded like my kind of read, so I bought it. Thirty-five cents from me to you. :)
Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving a comment.

Thanks Karen,
I hope you like the book! I've loaded up on all of yours! Your work and career path are inspiring and leave me more optimistic than I've been in years!! Hope to see you post from BEA!!! We'll all need to see that little black dress in action. Have a blast.

Karen McQuestion said...

Hey Kathleen--I'm planning on having a good time, thanks! The report might have to wait until I return though since I'm not planning on taking my laptop, and my phone is only a step up from a tin can with attached string.
